Surrounding Hotel Sogo

Along AH26 (Asian Highway 26) in the Philippines, which stretches for approximately 3,380 kilometers, stands the eye-catching two-star hotel Hotel Sogo Monumento, instantly recognizable by its brightly colored facade. Just a short walk away is Monumento Circle, a major traffic hub and one of the most well-known monumental roundabouts in Metro Manila.

The first days of my stay are fully devoted to observing, discovering, and processing the endless stream of impressions constantly thrown at my eyes and ears. Sounds, colors, smells, and movement blend together into a vibrant streetscape that never seems to slow down.

The area is dominated by colorful and often extravagantly decorated jeepneys, the iconic mode of transportation in the Philippines, as well as the distinctive yellow sidecar taxis, both motorized and pedal-powered. Near the hotel is one of the many jeepney terminals, while the sidecar taxis line up along several streets, patiently waiting for their next passengers.

Accompanied by Miss Aubrey, my local WajahAsia assistant, I take exploratory walks around the hotel area. During these walks, I try to absorb and capture the unique atmosphere of the massive city of Manila: the chaotic traffic, the energy of the streets, the street vendors, the nonstop activity, and above all, the authentic everyday life unfolding everywhere around me.

For a street photographer, this environment is an endless source of inspiration, where every street corner reveals another story waiting to be discovered.
